The Power of Yoga

I have dabbled with yoga for many years but it’s only since I started my AF journey at the end of 2017 that it’s been in my life more consistently. When I came back from the retreat recently, recognising that I had neglected yoga for a few months I set myself a 40 day challenge to do yoga or meditate every day in an attempt to embed the habit. Ive missed 2 days so far out of 30. Some days it has been really difficult to get myself onto the mat and I’ve literally only been there for 5 minutes. More recently I’ve found myself prioritising it and looking forward to that time.

In his wonderful book, The body holds the score, Bessel van de Kolk talks about how trauma is held in our bodies and nervous systems, and people need more than talking therapy to help with that. It’s like the body’s smoke alarm is set to be triggered at any hint of danger, leading to over reactions, stress and catastrophising all over the place. Their research has confirmed w

Vitamin D and Immunity

Vitamin D has in recent times come under greater scrutiny for its role in immunity.    And it appears that the role has even greater connotations that previously thought. According to peer-reviewed published articles of US NAtional Library of MEdicine, without vitamin D we are at an increased risk of developing a host of infections when serum levels are not at par.

All vitamins play a huge part in helping us maintain homeostasis and subsequent health. Their specific roles are in a constant state of evolution and more and more research is being done and a plethora of new information comes to light.

In the age of “the virus” and many other bugs that seeks to injure us, our immune system is called upon to soldier up and defend its home. Information is constantly being passed down through various sources referencing the use of vitamins, more recently, vitamins C, D and zinc.

We know from past teachings that these vitamins play a pivotal role in boosting our immune systems an

Reiki- Healing Science — Reiki energy

Reiki is never sent, it is drawn through the channel. For example, If I lay my hands on you to do a treatment, you will draw appropriate amounts of energy to which ever areas of your body need it. I am never drained in the process, as I too am treated as I “Give” a treatment. The energy enters at my crown chakra and passes through the upper energy centres to my heart and solar plexus. The rest then passes through my arms and hands to your body. I am thus never drained in the process, as a certain amount of energy is stored in me. However, at the same time, you do not take on any of my “stuff” (negative energy or blocks) as the Reiki passes through a purified channel in my body, opened by the attunements.

Why I’m Sharing

Let’s first start off with why I’m even writing this article to begin with. It probably seems a little out of left-field and is definitely part of my blogging niche. This year, the whirlwind of what is 2020, has been a very challenging one for our country. We were hit with an invisible enemy that has killed so many and completely turned all of our lives upside down. Now, we are facing another enemy, a much older disease – racism. We are all tired, we are all upset, we are all exhausted. It has been a long three months and the battles are a far cry from over (especially the latter). These circumstances are precisely why I’m sharing this post about meditation; it has been a wonderful tool for me during this emotional time and may be of some help to others also.

Benefits of Meditation

Meditation has some powerful benefits and many can attest to the positive boost it can bring to your life. It lowers stress levels, improves focus, allows us to connect better with our bodies, and fosters more kindness towards ourselves. You are essentially taking a few minutes to clear your chatter-filled mind and actually choose what you focus on – your breath. This practice of bringing your mind back to this one thought teaches us to remain in the present and sideline our distractions. I love the way the authors of mindful.org phrase meditation’s affect on the mind: “Training the mind through meditation is training in awareness, and training in awareness offers the potential to fundamentally transform your perspective on life.”

Yoga — My Fitness Lifestyle

Not only does yoga strengthen your muscles but it also increases your flexibility. Another perk: Stretching and breathing deeply during yoga helps to reduce stress hormones that contribute to belly fat,

since yoga reduces stress levels, it also has the potential to improve your overall eating habits (less stress eating!), encouraging weight loss.

Indeed, a November 2016 Journal of Clinical & Diagnostic Research study shows that men lost fat when they committed to a 14-week yoga program. The people in the study practiced yoga five days a week for 90 minutes — but don’t worry, every little bit counts.

Reiki- Healing Science — Reiki energy

Reiki is the Japanese word for Universal Life Force Energy. When the ‘Rei’ and ‘Ki’ are broken down into their two component parts, the Kanji (Japanese alphabet) definition for Rei is universal, transcendental spirit, mysterious power, essence. Ki is described as the vital life force energy, very similar to the Chi of Chinese acupuncture, Light to Christians, and Bioplasmic Energy to Russian researchers.
We all have Reiki energy (Universal Life Force Energy), for it is our birth right. What makes Reiki different from other healing methods, is the attunement (Also known as the initiation) process which the student experiences in the various levels of Reiki classes. Anyone can lay their hands on another person and help accelerate the healing process by transferring magnetic energy. A person who has been through the process of Reiki attunements however has experienced a very ancient technology for fine tuning the physical and etheric bodies to a higher vibratory level. In addition, certain of the energy centres, also known as chakras, are opened to enable the person to channel (And vibrate) higher amounts of Universal Life Force Energy.

My #1 Wellness Practice —

I have learned throughout my health and wellness practice that I truly needed to shift my mindset! The “Golden Rule”. “Treat others how you want to be treated.” You really need to take care of you before you can take care of others!

Are you truly doing it for you too?

That is a big question to ask yourself that really matters! Know your “why(s)”. When you tune into doing as an act of self love you are tapping into your desires and passions. That you deserve this and remove that doubt, self-limiting beliefs, guilt, etc. You make that commitment to yourself and make yourself accountable too!

You truly have the ability to achieve your “why(s)”! When you are able to relax your whole being you help yourself connect to your whole being better. You communicate to fully connect and engage. That level of communication and that deep connection you have with yourself helps you get back to the basics in what you need and achieving your whys!

That relaxed state also helps you slow down and maybe even get some good rest too! When relaxed you are more mindful and present. You take yourself out of stress as well as survival mode. Just taking time to pause and just breathe and clear the mind is a big assist to your whole well being!

I am finally out of that mindset that I need to spend hours getting my fitness on! Long as well as extreme workouts were not sustainable for me. I burnt out and had minor repetitive injuries that were becoming chronic. Start small and little by little it will add up!

I have been giving myself more grace, patience and compassion lately! For instance there are times I want to get up and get a workout in on the weekends. Then there are times where I want to sleep in, take my time and get in a later workout. Balance matters!

Another big mind blower is TO DO WHAT YOU LOVE! Your wellness practice needs to motivate and drive you. Not bore you and become a chore. Think outside the box and try new things

Energy Expenditure — Brain Food

This is a continuation of my previous post, Conservation of Energy. It seems facetious and obvious for me to state that you should spend your time on things that bring you more energy and avoid things that don’t. I’d like to explore this concept with you in more detail.

It’s common to misidentify what we think will energize us. Binge watching a show starts out as a great idea, but usually ends with us becoming one with the sofa and sinking into apathy. In some rare circumstances, we’re able to power through the series and feel better at the end than when we started.

The discrepancy is due to our mental state – which in turn is largely influenced by the amount of skill we have and the challenge presented by the task. Take a look at the image below.

5 Simple Ideas To Boost Your Wellness

1 . Write A Journal

Writing in a journal is a largely therapeutic pastime, it’s creative, reflective and a very worthy act of self care. You might like to use a journal to write down your cherished memories and experiences? Perhaps you’d prefer to brainstorm your career and personal goals?  Some people like to use a journal to write down their feelings during times of emotional stress. It’s nice to have a place just for you, to write down your uncensored thoughts in complete honesty.

2. Experimental Cooking

Always feel like you’re cooking the same old dishes? Why not get experimental, buy some new recipe books and set yourself some new cooking challenges. You could challenge yourself to cook dishes from around the world, choosing a cuisine from a new country each week. If you’re a meat-eater, you could learn how to cook some tasty new vegetarian dishes. Fancy yourself as a bit of a baking whizz? Why not attempt some
